Research Interests

 

My research interests are the study of the three-dimensional elastic wave speed structure of the Earth using seismic tomography, and the re-evaluation of historical instrumental seismicity.

 

Seismic Tomography. Arrival times from earthquakes and explosions, group and phase velocity measurements of surface waves, and waveforms are used to image the internal structure of the Earth. Different methods are used as a function of the region (local, regional or global), data type (arrival time or waveforms), and type of wave (body waves or surface waves):

 

  • Local earthquake travel time tomography.
  • Global travel time tomography.
  • Surface wave tomography.

 

Historical seismicity. I am working in collaboration with Bob Engdahl in the relocation of global historical instrumental seismicity (1918-1963). We currently use arrival times catalogued in the bulletins of the International Seismological Summary (ISS)
