Nowadays, the knowledge of the Earth System (Geosphere, Hydrosphere, Biosphere and Atmosphere) as an holistic unit is of paramount importance. The dynamics and the interaction of its processes have direct impacts on society. Therefore, the scientific research must provide effective answers of how the Earth works, how we can tackle the geological risks and how we can take advantage of the natural resources following a sustainable way.
The advantage of this new holistic perspective is that it is useful to transmit the geological knowledge to other research fields and, thus, to be employed in other terrestrial (or planetary) environments. The current direction of the Geoscience research requires to clearly define the objectives and the operational schemes’ focus on serving the needs (i.e. assessment and mitigation of the geological risks and sustainable use of the natural and energy resources) of our society in the near future.
Hence, we focus our investigation in three challenges:
These topics are integrated in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) set by the United Nations organization (UN). Our research is related to the goals 7 (affordable and clean energy), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), and 13 (climate action). Our research, developed within the Life research area, is always carried out applying cutting-edge techniques following a real multidisciplinary approach, which obliges us to interact and collaborate with the other two CSIC research (Society and Matter) areas.
